Hello,
This El Nino year has given us some late season rain but the sun is out now and the beaches look very inviting.

Hello,
Even as the Real Estate market begins to recover here on Roatan there are still great deals to be found. This short sale is an unfortunate situation for the seller but will be exactly what one of you is looking for.
The house is approximately 1,500 sqft and has 2Br and 2Ba with a deck that spans the entire house. The house is being sold with an adjacent lot (that can be sold separately) and the total acreage is almost 1.5 acres. Located in Palmetto Bay Plantation the owners will enjoy the 2 miles of beautiful white sand beach with excellent diving and snorkeling found on this north shore location.
For more information on this property or any others available through our MLS database send me an email, Philip@RoatanLiving.com or call me on my U.S. phone 831 359-4244.
Happy Holidays to everyone!
In addition to the traditional holiday season it is also the season for tourists on Roatan. Here is a little look at West Bay Beach last week.
Let me give a big “Welcome Back” to the guests on Roatan today and all through the winter.
Enjoy Life, Philip
The good news regarding travel to Honduras was announced last week by the U.S. Department of State, no more travel alert! Here is the official statement:
“The travel alert issued for Honduras on November 6, 2009, is canceled, effective immediately. The improved security situation in Honduras has removed the immediate threat to the safety and security of U.S. citizens in Honduras.”
Although there had never been a problem with security here on Roatan or the Bay Islands, the U.S. Dept. of State did not distinguish between locations within a country. Consequently the alert which was intended for the large cities on the mainland severely impacted tourism here in the Bay Islands.
The timing of this announcement is very good, as the “busy” tourism season in the Bay Islands is just starting to ramp up. I have already seen a noticeable increase in visitors to the resorts and beaches this past weekend. Some increase might have happened anyway but the removal of the alert will certainly encourage others who may have had concerns to come down for a visit.
So if your ears are freezing and your fingers are numb send me an email Philip@RoatanLiving.com and I’ll help you find a lounge chair in the sun.
As I travel around the island I have been making it a point to ask resort managers, desk clerks and scuba shop owners what their bookings look like for the holidays. So far the responses have been “Our Bookings Are Up”. That response is certainly an improvement over the last 10 months.
The dive shop at Palmetto said that they have received enough reservations that they would need two boats during the holidays to handle all their guests. They typically operate with only one boat.
None of the resorts or dive shops I spoke with indicated that they were full for the holidays but that is a distinct possibility since Christmas is still four weeks away and there are always those who procrastinate making their reservations.
Everyone here is excited that the tourists are beginning to return to Roatan. It has been a VERY slow year and having guests on the island will certainly brighten the holidays. Don’t forget that if you are interested in Real Estate here we offer a buyer stays free program, check out the web site for details.
Well here is the latest bargain on real estate here in Roatan. Home site lots in Parrot Tree reduced 30%! That takes the price back to 2005 levels. These lots are still owned by the developer and he needs to move some of these properties to keep the cash flowing so buyers are going to save a bundle.
Parrot Tree Plantation Hillside lots over Marina
My favorite lot is one of the view properties above the Marina. It is lot 116 and will sell now for $105,000. It has a view over the Marina to the turquoise water of the reef and even to the mountains of mainland Honduras.
If a stunning home site with unlimited possibilities is your Caribbean dream then you can combine this great lot with the lot below to make a site suitable for an infinity edge pool to take your breath away.
If you would like some additional information abut this property or others in our Roatan MLS database please write or give me a call. I look forward to being your Realtor on Roatan.

Residents of Roatan have experienced a nice improvement in the availability of food and beverages this year. The Bulk Gourmet, operated by Butch and Sherry have been a long time supplier of imported products for restaurants and residents. This summer they decided to condense their delivery days from five to four and take that one day a week to open a store front for their customers to be able to shop their huge variety of products. The store is located in the Hyber Shipping complex, just look for the big red doors. They are currently open every Thursday so drop in and say hello. Don’t forget to ask Butch for a sample of booze.
Also just recently opened in the new Mega Plaza shopping center in French Harbour is the Super Mercado. This general grocery store is a regional chain in Honduras and will stock a large selection of food products and kitchen wares when it is fully stocked. This is also the first store on Roatan to have an escalator!
I would be slacking if I didn’t mention the new and greatly improved Eldons’ grocery. The new store has been open for a few months now and it has been great to see the big selection of U.S. products and to know that the inventory is being maintained. They also have an in-store bakery and a great selection of greeting cards.
Roatan continues to grow and improve with great businesses and services. Hope to see you on the island this winter.
I want to take a moment to write about “Nurse Peggy” and her dream of Clinica Esperanza. Peggy Stranges started her clinic in the apartment beneath her home when she saw the huge need of the islanders for basic health care. Later she moved the clinic into donated space in the Son Rise Calvary Church in Sandy Bay. When again the clinic grew to big for that space Nurse Peggy was able to, over time, build Clinica Esperanza.
Peggy Stranges has dedicated herself to building Clínica Esperanza, otherwise known as “Hospital Ms. Peggy.” Together, with Honduran physician Raymond Cherington, M.D. and Arizona-based physician Patrick Connell, M.D., and through the generous support from Roatán’s community leaders, Nurse Peggy has realized her dream of building a first class freestanding hospital.
The Clinic is open Monday though Friday and begins patient intakes at 7:30AM and continues until noon. Medical care is provided until all patients are seen. Clinica Esperanza averages 300 patients per week-15,600 patients per year!. The cost to the patients starts at 70 Limpera ($3.70) donation for basic care and 500 Limpera ($26.45) donation for rapid care. NO one is turned away for lack of payment.
On duty daily is a Physician, Pediatrician and Dentist with specialists available at different times. Also on duty are a group of six to ten hard working volunteers and visiting Medical students from around the world. The clinic also employs ten Hondurans which is supporting ten local families. Which continues Nurse Peggy’s committment to employ local island citizens.
If you would like a tour of Clinica Esperanza to see what your donations have achieved or what donations are needed to continue this wonderful project click on this link for a Virtual Tour of Clinica Esperanza.
